When trying to figure out how to start with blogging it can get quite overwhelming. Do you start with a name, a topic, a platform? Do you start looking for hosting, do you need an SSL certificate? There is a lot to consider. If you’re serious about blogging and want to start a successful blog you need some strong foundations.
How I Started with Blogging
I have had a website since I was at university, first it was to document my progress at uni. It then became a portfolio site to help me get a job. Once in work, I turned it back into a blog and I was writing about my holidays, hobbies and life experiences. As I worked in the industry I learned more about digital marketing. I tried some of the techniques I learned on my own site but never got anywhere with it. This was because of 2 things. I wasn’t consistent and I had weak foundations.
Why I Failed the First Time
I had not taken the time before setting up my blog to really think about where I wanted to take it. I hadn’t set goals for my blog so I was aimlessly creating content thinking one day I might be able to earn an income from it.
Having taken everything on board I’m trying again. But this time I am bringing you with me. I’m going to share with you the step by step process of building a successful blog. We are going to take the time to put in the prework and lay some solid foundations.
So let’s create a plan, so we don’t end up creating endless aimless content as I did before. Let’s build successful blogs together!
Why Start a Blog?
This is a question we need to be clear on the answer for before we begin. Why should I start a blog? There are several reasons you might be thinking about starting a blog:
- Maybe you love to write and want to share that with the world.
- Perhaps you have a passion, talent, skill or hobby you want to share with the world.
- You could have an amazing or difficult life experience that you have overcome and want to help others with.
- It might be that you want to build a brand online, to make an income and be able to have a flexible lifestyle as a result.
Whatever your reason, be clear on it. You need to know your destination to create a solid plan to get there. It’s rare we do anything in life without a purpose. Like getting in our car without a destination in mind. Without an end goal, we can end up driving round and round in circles.
So let’s turn that why into a goal. There are a few different types of goals we can set.
We could set goals like
“I want to get 100 followers on Instagram this month”
this is a fixed goal. It focuses on the outcome and is not 100% in your control. This can lead to disappointment and subsequently self-doubt if you are not able to achieve this goal.
If you remove the time frame it will remove some of the pressure but the goal still remains out your control.
“I want to get 100 followers on Instagram”
This is likely to happen at some point but is very open-ended and can result in a lack of motivation.
Try to focus on something that you can control, like the amount of effort you put in.
“I am going to post weekly on my blog”
This is something you have 100% control over. You can make sure you are writing that content and getting it uploaded every week.
By preparing posts in advance you can avoid disruptions to your posting schedule. Have a few posts in draft ready to go up should you have any unexpected disruptions to life.
Think about how you can create goals that link back to your why.
Why I’m Starting a Blog
My reason (why) for creating this new, more specific blog is as follows:
To share my knowledge and interest in design, organic marketing and personal branding. By sharing this knowledge my aim is to inspire and educate aspiring content creators to get started online. In doing so I aim is to build a brand an income online through various revenue streams. Including affiliate marketing, ads, digital products and 1-1 services.
Some of my blogging goals include:
Upload one blog post every other week
Upload a video every 3 days to supplement my blog content
Pin daily on Pinterest to generate traffic to my blog
Best Place to Start a Blog For You
To sum up. This blog is for serious bloggers. It’s for those of you who want to create a professional blog to share something with the world. The process of how to start with blogging begins with some work offline to get the foundations in place for a successful blog.
This all starts with getting clear on your why. So take some time now, with your favourite notepad and pen, to note down your intentions for your blog. What do you want to get out of it and what do you want others to get out of it. Then start mapping out how you are going to get there with some process-related goals.
I hope you have found this useful, my beginner bloggers. Stick around for more posts to help you get started with blogging. I will be creating content both here on the blog and on my YouTube channel Steph Welch.
